Gifts wrapped at Brookfield Library

The Friends of the Brookfield Public Library will host a special Holiday Gift Wrap Event on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the library, 3609 Grand Blvd.

Bring in your Christmas presents (or buy some books at the Book Nook) and let the Friends wrap your gifts for you. Gift wrapping is free of charge, though monetary donations to support the Friends of the Library are appreciated.

Jazz up the season

The Brookfield Jazz Society hosts its annual holiday party with a concert of live jazz by the Freenotes Jazz Band on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. in the lower-level Jazz Room of Sawa's Old Warsaw, 9200 W. Cermak Road in Broadview.

The public is welcome to attend. For this event there is a $10 cover charge for members and non-members alike. Doors open at 7 p.m., with the music starting at 7:15 p.m. sharp.

Vintage TV Christmas episodes

Celebrate the holiday season by watching seasonal episodes from classic TV shows, including "The Avengers," "The Twilight Zone" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show" at Brookfield Public Library, 3609 Grand Blvd., on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 1 p.m.

Steel Magnolias at LTHS

The Lyons Township High School Theatre Board presents "Steel Magnolias" on Dec. 13 and 14 at 7 p.m. and on Dec. 15 at 3 p.m. in the North Campus Reber Center, 100 S. Brainard Ave. in LaGrange.

The play is set in small-town Louisiana in the 1980s and tells the story of a close-knit group of women, focusing on their friendships.

Tickets are $10 ($5 for seniors and students with ID). They are available at the box office, starting 30 minutes prior to the show.

Concert Winds play holiday faves

North Riverside Public Library, 2400 Desplaines Ave., hosts a concert of festive music by the Chicago Concert Winds on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m.

This 12-piece concert band will play joyful seasonal favorites such as Leroy Anderson's "Christmas Festival" and "Sleigh Ride."

ν Enjoy a laugh at Nazareth Academy's Comedy Club Showcase on Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. in the school's Romano Family Theater, 1209 W. Ogden Ave. in LaGrange Park. The showcase, which features improv, sketches and video shorts, is free and open to the public. No reservations necessary.

ν Holiday Magic, the annual festival of lights at Brookfield Zoo, 3300 Golf Road in Brookfield, returns Dec. 14-15. The zoo is open each day of the event from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Come early and stay later for the festivities, which begin at 4 p.m. Guests should park in the north lot. ν Riverside Parks and Rec invites children to drop off letters to Santa Claus at a special mailbox that will be placed on the east side of the historic water tower, 10 Pine Ave. Letters received through Dec. 20 will get a response, but the mailbox stays open until Christmas. 

ν Riverside Arts Center, 32 E. Quincy St., presents a solo show featuring the work of artist Jennifer Oldis-Kryczka through Jan. 4. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. Free and open to the public.

ν The Riverside Township Lions Club is collecting unwanted Christmas lights for recycling. Working and non-working lights that are for indoor or outdoor use can be dropped off at the Riverside Public Library, 1 Burling Road, or the North Riverside Public Library, 2401 Desplaines Ave., during normal business hours through Jan. 15, 2020.

ν C ompassion Factory Art Gallery and Studio, 9210 Broadway Ave. in Brookfield, presents "Symmetry," an exhibit of work featuring artists Bala Thiagarajan and Rita Sharha through Dec. 21. Gallery hours are Thursdays from 4 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

ν Lyons Township High School para-educators are holding a collection of new winter hats, scarves, gloves/mittens and socks for District 204 area children and adults in need. The drive continues through Jan. 14, 2020. Drop off items at the libraries/discovery centers at either the North Campus, 100 S. Brainard Ave. in LaGrange or South Campus, 4900 S. Willow Springs Road in Western Springs.

ν Brookfield Public Library, 3609 Grand Blvd., on Dec. 16-18 at 3:30 p.m. hosts The Final Countdown, where high schoolers are invited to prep for final exams in a quiet space with snacks and pizza.

ν Riverside Public Library, 1 Burling Road, hosts the Genealogy Club for its holiday party and meeting on Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Public Meeting Room; a Literary Christmas with Megan Wells on Dec. 17 at 7 p.m.; and Hands On Stories (for kids PreK and K) on Dec. 17 at 1 p.m. Registration suggested at 708-442-6366 or by emailing youthservices@riversidelibrary.org.

ν North Riverside Public Library, 2400 Desplaines Ave., hosts a Senior Drop-in on Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to noon in the Meeting Room. Play cards and socialize every Friday.

ν The Brookfield Elks Lodge, 9022 31st St., hosts bingo every Monday night. Doors open at 5 p.m. and games start at 7 p.m. minimum cash payout of $2,275 a night, plus pull tabs, lightning, tic-tac and raffles.

ν The community is invited to jog, walk or run inside on the indoor track at the Lyons Township High School South Campus fieldhouse, 4900 S. Willow Springs Road in Western Springs from 6 to 7 a.m. on days when school is in session through March 20, 2020. Free.
