With the Memorial Day weekend around the corner, police in Riverside and North Riverside have been beefing up traffic enforcement patrols as part of the Illinois Department of Transportation's Click It or Ticket initiative, which runs through May 28.

"Our officers see firsthand the tragedy when people do not buckle up," said North Riverside Deputy Police Chief Christian Ehrenberg, in a press release. "It's such a simple and effective way to protect yourself while traveling. As the Memorial Day weekend approaches, we want to make sure people are doing everything they can to stay safe when traveling."

While about 95 percent of motorists use seatbelts, a disproportionate number of fatalities involve unbelted motorists and passengers. Both departments will have special patrols enforcing seatbelt and car seat laws as well as looking out for impaired drivers.

Funding for the additional traffic enforcement patrols comes from federal Highway Administration safety grants administered through IDOT.
