U.S Congressman Daniel Lipinski, whose 3rd District includes the southern half of Brookfield and a tiny portion of Riverside, was among those who were present when a 19-year-old man armed with an assault-style rifle began firing into the crowd at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California, on the evening of July 28.
The gunman killed three people and wounded more than a dozen more before he was shot and killed by police.
Lipinski, according to a spokesman, is on vacation in northern California and attended the popular food festival with his wife, Judy. Neither was hurt in the incident.
"The shooter was not far from us as we heard the loud 'pops,' which seemed to get closer as we ran," Lipinski said in a statement issued by his office. "We are very thankful to law enforcement. The tragedy would have been far worse if not for their quick action. Also, the festival staff did a great job in the aftermath."
Lipinski went on to say that "the level of gun violence in our nation is sickening. It is an issue we must deal with not only legislatively, but spiritually and socially."
