The Nazareth Academy football team opened the season in a highly anticipated game against Cardinal Ritter from St. Louis. The Roadrunners, who won the Class 7A state title last season, struggled with turnovers and fell behind 26-7 late in the first half.

Nazareth rallied in the second half only to come up short in a 32-21 loss in LaGrange Park on Saturday, Aug. 31.

The Roadrunners scored touchdowns on a 2-yard run by Derrick Strongs, a 33-yard pass from J.J. McCarthy to Tyler Morris, and a 36-yard run by Jailon Welch.

Mekhi Hagens threw four TD passes (3 to Luther Burden III) and Marvin Burks scored on a 68-yard run to lead Cardinal Ritter offensively.

Contrbuting photographer Ian McLeod took photos of the game. Here's a photo gallery.
